Q: What does an orthopedic surgeon treat?
A: An orthopedic surgeon treats diseases and injuries of the musculo-skeletal system including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves and the spine.

Q: How long do total joint replacements last?
A: 95% of patients who’ve had total joint replacements are still doing very well 10-15 years after surgery. The replacements typically last 20 years or more.

Q: How long will I be in the hospital after joint replacement?
A: Hospital stays are typically 3-5 days.

Q: Should children lift weights?
A: Up until age 13, children do not usually increase muscle mass. And, in fact, large weights can injure bone growth. Therefore, weight training is discouraged until the children reach the teen-age years.

Q: What is the most common cause of non-injury knee pain in teens?
A: Inflammation of the cartilage of the knee cap. Treated by doing quad isometric exercises and the use of Advil.

Q: Do orthopedic doctors treat foot problems?
A: Yes.

Q: When do I need to see an orthopedic doctor for back pain?
A: Most back pain can be treated by your family doctor. But if it’s not improved by conservative care such as heat/cold therapy, physical therapy, medication, limiting physical activities, or if there is leg pain, numbness or weakness…you may require an evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon who may prescribe bracing, injection or other forms of therapy, and in some cases, may suggest surgery.

Q: What is the most common cause of back pain?
A: A sprain is the most common cause of back pain.
